The Printmakers’ Council of Great Britain was founded in 1964 by a group of professional artists. Its aim, in the Council’s own statement, was to improve the position of the graphic arts in relation to the other fine arts by setting its members’ works before the public through its exhibitions and publications.

In 1981, in furtherance of that aim, the Council published a Portfolio comprising ten original prints, each by a distinguished artist member of the Council. Each print was limited to an edition of 75 plus eight artist’s proofs. The artists, amongst others, included Anthony Gross, Gertrude Hermes, John Piper, Michael Rothenstein, Valerie Thornton and Julian Trevelyan.
